I’ve started to do contributing articles over at Inside Facebook. I’ll mainly be covering aspects of the new profile integration points from a developers point of view. If you’re interested you can check out the site here:

New webhost
July 17, 2008
Lots of things have been changing around Mikeknoop.com. The latest change is I’ve moved my shared hosting service over to a new provider. Totalchoicehosting.com
Everything has been transfered over, and I’m still waiting for a few DNS servers to update around the internet. By the time you read this post, the setup will be complete.
Request Phone Numbers
July 8, 2008
I’ve just launched my Facebook application called Request Phone Numbers! From the About page…
Request Phone Numbers is a replacement for the age-old Facebook “Lost my phone” group.
Use this application to securely and easily request friend’s phone numbers. It provides a simple, consolidated user interface and cleans up automatically after you’ve completed your request.
Integrating into Facebook’s request and notification features, Request Phone Numbers distinguishes your requests apart from standard group invites in order to increase the likelihood that your friends will reply.
In addition, you can download a single vCard containing all names and phone numbers who replied to your request, preventing you from having to manually type them into your phone. These can be sent directly to a cell phone via text message or downloaded locally to your computer.
You’ll notice the link I added over on the navigation pane to the right. You can access the app by clicking on the link, or by searching for “Request Phone Numbers” on Facebook. Let me know what you think!
Back to XP
July 5, 2008
After using Ubuntu for about 4 months on IBM x60s, I’ve finally decided to switch back to Windows XP. Ubuntu is a great operating system, especially considering it is free. There are 2 things that cooerced me to switch to XP.
- Battery Life
- Laptop temperature
In terms of battery life, Windows would last close to 8 hours, typically about 7. In Ubuntu I was lucky to get 4. I’ve read over and over that Ubuntu simply does not have the drivers to get that kind of battery life. Maybe eventually it will, but for now, I think Ubuntu will best live in the world of desktop machines.
As for the laptop temperature, this may be x60s specific. My laptop got very very hot when running standard tasks, such as browsing the web. This is mostly because I was using the restricted Atheros wireless driver. But even then, Windows does not run hot and I was starting to worry about my hardware overheating.
So because of these issues, I’ve uninstalled Ubuntu and installed a variant of XP (tinyXP) and have been happily running on that for the past week or so, without any of the above issues. I’ll probably check in with Ubuntu from time to time, but for now, I beleive Ubuntu is primarily destined for the world of desktop computers.
Water ice on Mars!
June 19, 2008

NASA has announced that the Phoenix Mars rover has taken pictures of water based ice!
NASA’s full report can be found here…
http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/06_19_pr.php
The confirmation came when analyzing two still shots beneath the rover. Originally Phoenix took pictures of a white substance embedded in it’s wheel track when it first landed. NASA was unsure if this was truly ice or just a salt.
Today NASA released a second photo of the exact same area, and surprised, it has shrunk in size! This can only mean that the substance is a water based ice which sublimated into the atmosphere upon being exposed by the landing!
Edit: Here is the full size picture, be sure to take note of the big clumps in the bottom left hand corner of the picture that completely disappear! This is the biggest indicator that what you’re looking at is ice.
